The car fenders determine the look of your vehicle significantly, because they decorate the car around. They also have important tasks: They ensure that uprooted dirt and water from the road do not end up in an uncontrolled manner on other road users, but are intercepted. In addition, they stand for safety, because they overlap in their width, the tires and thus protect, for example, pedestrians from the risk of getting their feet under the wheels. How many fenders does a car have?

How do you find the right car fender?

Sheet steel: Steel sheet is the cheapest and most solid material in the car industry. Car fenders made of this material occupy the largest market share. Already at the beginning of the car this material was used. Since steel tends to corrode, today it is often galvanized to prevent rust as long as possible. For refractory galvanizing the parts are double galvanized. A combination of steel and aluminum, so-called hybrid components, is also conquering the market more and more. Steel car fenders are very sturdy, durable and yet lightweight. Modern types of steel make this possible.

- Aluminum: After steel, aluminum is the fender material in second place. As a light metal, it has a lower density and is therefore more expensive to process. That makes it a little more expensive. Aluminum produces a stable end result like steel. Aluminum car fenders are increasingly being used on mid-range vehicles and classic cars.

- Plastic: Car mudguards made of plastic have a decisive advantage: they do not rust. In addition, they often consist of renewable resources (vegetable oil), which benefits the environment. In terms of stability, plastic car mudguards are in no way inferior to their steel and aluminum relatives. This makes this material interesting for the future, because auto parts made of lightweight material are particularly important in solar and energy-saving cars. So they have an optimal mileage and a longer range, because the air resistance is lower.

- GRP: Glass fiber reinforced plastic is a concept in the car tuning sector. Simplified, it is also called "fiberglass". It consists of a mixture of glass fiber and plastic and thus has high stability and excellent elongation at low cost. In addition, rust even in severe weather has little chance. GFK is often used for unusual car fenders, for example, for widening. It is important in this particular case, a visit to the TÜV to register this.
